James’ Top 5 Tips for Public Speaking

1. Be yourself.

How many times have you watched someone on TV, on stage or on social media and thought “They’re acting weird” or “Jeez, they’ve changed!”. Make sure that when you are doing any kind of public speaking that you act like yourself. Forget about what you think people want to see, you are there for a reason and they want to see you rather than someone else.

2. Drink water…lots of it.

Drinking water is world famous for being good for the health. Actually, it’s not just your health that benefits, your voice does too. Ever find yourself getting a little raspy half way through that really important pitch at work? Struggling speak to that difficult client over the phone? Usually a little bit of warm water, honey and lemon will sort that one out. But don’t start drinking ice cold water during an event, that’ll just seize everything up!

3. Focus on your audience.

Too many people focus on what they want out of a speech, conference or meeting. Time to change that methodology – focus on your audience and what you want them to take away from it.

4. Breathe…then breathe some more.

Breathing not only keeps us alive and kicking, but it’s also incredibly important for the voice. If you’re getting nervous before an event or speech, focus on breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. If you’re talking too fast, focus breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. You get the idea…

5. There are worse things in the world.

Your speech is probably one of the smallest parts of your life when you put it into the grand scheme of things. There are terrible things happening all over the world as I write this. Remember that the next time you get nervous about speaking (trust me it works!)
