Speech Therapy Meaning

Speech and Language Therapists or Speech Pathologists are medical professionals who provide support and treatment to children and adults with a range of conditions such as speech delays, disorders of the voice, and communication and swallowing difficulties. Speech and Language Therapists tend to work in environments such as: hospitals, children’s centres, schools, nursing homes and community health centres. They work alongside other medical professionals to diagnose disorders, support individuals and develop appropriate treatment plans.

Speech and Language Therapists can help and support infants, children, adults and elderly people who may have difficulty swallowing and/or drinking, or who have speech and communication difficulties due to a medical condition. There are certain medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington disease, oral and laryngeal cancer, stroke and dementia which can impact an individual’s understanding of language or using language, when speaking and using voice. Learning disabilities in both children and adults can also impact an individual’s speech and understanding or using language.
